Coming soon: Mobile phone calls in Europe airspace

After the Emirates became the 1st airline to allow its customer to make mobile call during its flight, European Commission new rule approved the usage of the mobile phone calls for planes flying in its European airspace.

With the minimum altitude of 3,000m and above, mobile phone can be used. The first services could be starting from next month onwards.

How does the system work?
Small mobile phone base station, pico cell, installed at the aircraft will be switched on after take off. Pico cell will generate a bubble of coverage in and around the aircraft. Calls made through the pico cell will be routed to terrestrial network using the satellite links.
